.htaccess
The .htaccess file is a special file which controls access to your website.
It can be used to block clients by IP address, redirect clients and handle error management such as 403 and 404 errors (file or directory not found).
It is placed in a folder and applies to that folder and all sub-folders.
Example .htaccess file
order allow,deny
allow from all
deny from 212.187.248.101
ErrorDocument 404 /404.htm
ErrorDocument 403 /403.htm
Options -Indexes
The first three lines set the main access rules.
The 403 and 404 rules specify the pages to load in case of a directory or page not found error.
The last rule turns off the display of the directory listing in the case of a 404 or 403 error.
