A Digital Certificate can be provided by a domain to certify encryption based on the SSL (Secure Socket Layer)
This provides a secure area accessed at e.g. https://www.yourdomain.com.
Certificates may be unsigned, or be signed by a Digital Certification Authority such as Verisign, Thawte, etc.
Browsers will often issue a warning if a certificate is unsigned or the certificate date is not correct.
