Eskom has announced that the subsidies on hot-water solar geysers that it offers in the form of a cash-back rebate will be increased from its current level of about 15% to roughly 33%, depending on pricing.
According to Eskom using a solar geyser can cut a households power usage by up to 70%. As the geysers are solar-powered, they only need to draw power on cloudy days. Solar geysers can cost as much as R30,000, or more, depending upon the required water cylinder capacity.
Only about 2,000 rebates have been issued so far, and Eskom hopes to improve on this disappointing uptake, given the power shortages facing the company.
